Flag Football

Flag football will be played as a summer Olympic sport beginning in 2028, in Los Angeles, USA. It is a sport that girls love to play. This is especially true here in Colorado. The game has been sanctioned as a permanent high school sport. This has happened after years of a successful pilot program. Consequently, more than 50 schools statewide have signed on, including dozens in the Denver area. Colorado is the 11th state to sanction the sport for high school girls.

Chiefly, there is no hitting allowed. Tackling is done differently than the familiar form of football. There are two flags hanging from the ball carrier’s waist that must be ripped away by a defender.

Mr. Krueger (High School Athletics Commissioner) is proud of the fact that Colorado is among the nation’s leaders in providing opportunities for female athletes. He says girls sports cultivate leadership, self confidence, and equality-on and off the field. In addition, there is a new era of inclusivity and self-empowerment for every girl who takes part.

The Broncos have helped provide funding to all of the schools that have added flag football to their athletic programs. Carrie Walton Penner is one of the team owners and Chair of the Denver Broncos Foundation Board. Accordingly, she said, “This is a historic moment for Colorado and, most importantly, for girls in our state who have a new pathway into sports through flag football.” Additionally, Ms. Penner continued, “Flag creates a powerful sense of belonging and community for our next generation of leaders.” The Broncos will provide support to this coming season and in years to come.

Certainly, it is the fastest-growing sport for girls in the US. Besides, Nike and USA Football have made sure all of the girl teams have uniforms and all the necessary equipment.
