A Historic Game
Certainly, this will be the 119th year the Baseball at Midnight without lights is played, which dates back to 1906. The contest began as a bar bet. The Eagle’s Club and the California Bar, led by Eddie Stroecker slapped down the wager. Various teams from the Fairbanks area played until 1960, when the Alaska Golddpanners, a collegiate summer team, became the exclusive hosts. Basically, the opponents for the game are picked from other collegiate summer teams anywhere in the United States.
The Alaska Goldpanners will play over 30 home games. They will host teams from Idaho, Washington, the Phillipines, San Diego, Ventura County, and San Francisco. Tickets for the games are available on the team’s website- https://goldpanners.pointstreaksites.com/ The Goldpanners will have players on their team this year from top schools such as UC Irvine, Washington State, and Gonzaga. Altogether, 162 Goldpanners have gone on to the Major Leagues.
The Alaska Goldpanner’s record in 2023 was an impressive 33 wins versus only 9 losses. Home game statistics are even more outstanding, with the team going 28 and 4. Consequently, that’s some very good baseball.
