The Gymnastic Joker

The Gymnastic Joker plays a silly joke. We usually associate the strange and unusual with frightening experiences. Sometimes the unexplained does not scare us, but instead the “invisible” seems to have a sense of humor or at the very least, likes to play silly jokes. Charles Fort, in his book, “Wild Talents” shared just such a silly trick.

An elderly woman, Mme. Blerotti went to the Magistrate of the Ste. Marguerite district of Paris with a frantic complaint against someone or something. She lived in a flat in the Rue Montreuil with her son and brother. She complained that every time she entered her apartment someone or something made her walk on her hands, with her feet in the air. The Magistrate held her in custody for he feared he was dealing with an insane woman. He then sent a cop to her home to investigate.

The cop returned with the son. The 27 year old son claimed that his mother’s story was indeed the truth. He was unable to explain what the cause of the phenomena might be. But, his mother, his uncle, and he himself were forced to walk around on their hands upon entering the premises. The Magistrate then sent for the uncle who also stated that his sister’s story was truthful. He too, had been forced to walk on his hands upon entering the apartment. Next, the Concierge of the house was brought in. “… as soon as I entered the rooms occupied by them, I found myself on all flours, endeavoring to throw my feet in the air,” he said. The Magistrate ordered the flat was under the influence of an unknown malady and ordered it disinfected.

Certainly, no known reason was ever given as to the why the unknown malady decided to pick on the family. But, it certainly was a silly joke played by the Gymnastic Joker.
