The Norse Sagas and L’Anse aux Meadows
The archaeological site may have a possible connection to Leif Erikson. Leif Erikson is mentioned in the Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red. The sagas were written in the 13th century and describe Norse explorations of Iceland. Greenland, and North America. Archaeologist husband and wife, Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad discovered the remains of the village in 1960. There were eight wood- framed buildings covered with sod. Artifacts found included butternuts which do not grow north of New Brunswick. This may indicate that the encampment served as a base camp for further Norse exploration to the south. The Norse sagas certainly suggest such voyages did occur. The settlement may have served as a base camp for further explorations.
L’Anse aux Meadows Archaeology
Chiefly, over 800 Norse artifacts have been found at the 30 square mile location. There were workshops which included blacksmithing, woodworking, and ship repairing. Other things were found such as a stone oil lamp, a whetstone, a bronze fastening pin, and a bone knitting pin. The needle and a spindle suggest that women along with men occupied the settlement.
